RED ALERT: Protect Your PC from Conficker Worm!

You have read it right, this is no April fool’s joke and its getting worse as the real Conficker creator is yet to be found and apprehended. Well until then, it is wise to take precautionary steps to protect your PC from this Conficker worm threat.

The Conficker worm currently have been identified with four variants with the latest Conficker D variant. The Conficker worm have capabilities to siphon sensitive data from infected PC and sending this information back to its master. It can spread itself automatically through file sharing and turn infected PC into a zombie or spammer PC with a click of a mouse. The Conficker worm mostly targets businesses with Microsoft Windows installed which do not regularly update their windows or desktop especially with security upgrade patch release in October by Microsoft. While home user PC with a firewall will be less risky nevertheless should consider it as any serious threat and should click yes on Windows automatic updates.

Although Microsoft have declared a bounty of USD250,000 – KACHING! for any info that leads to the capture of the Conficker worm creator, they are still at large and more and more PCs are getting infected. Microsoft have identified symptoms of an infected PCs are as follows:

Windows Automatic Updates, Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS), Windows Defender, and Windows Error Reporting Services are disabled are fail to execute.
PC maybe locked out and the network is flooded with connections although not much programs are running.
Security-related Web sites such as Avast, Avira, F-secure, Kaspersky cannot be accessed for updates.
