They say the most beatiful words to say to a person is their real name. However, have you ever felt that it is always been a drag to come up with really cool username for Facebook or Myspace or even Youtube. Its even more annoying when the username already been taken up by somebody else. Imagine competing for John or Sarah or Obama on Twitter or LinkedIn where there are millions of people already joined. Adding numbers at the back of the username is certainly not so cool either -almost feel like car number plate or robots, very distasteful. More so important when the username is used as a personal branding for online business when it is critical to have a name that can be related to or remember easily and can be used consistently across all platform.
To solve this Dot-o-mator.com is a cool site that helps to generate sticky web2.0 name suitable for company but also can be use as username. It is just a simple click on the generate button and it will churn out one name at a time and list them on the right side column. You can generate a list of them and pick and choose a few as your wishlist. Although there is another options on the Dot-o-mator and where you can use the pre-defined name and combine feature to generate names, it is not as neat as the web2.0 name generator feature.

If your list is still too short or still not your liking, open up BehindTheName.com and click on generate button for a random name. You can also specify how many given names or gender type or even a surname have for the generated name. There are category like country or nationality, mythology or roles like rapper, witch and even Transformers. This should add very unique and ingenious names that normally we won’t think of. You may use the name generated at Dot-o-mator web2.0 as a surname as well or as always you can use your imagination. At least it is better than number or your year of birth.
Now you can take this list and check these usernames availability at Namechk. Namechk is a new free web service that helps check the availability of username across more than 100 of most popular social networking and social book marking websites. The search response is often fast and the results are displayed in distinguish colors -red means taken and green means you can use it – making it easier to spot. However, I don’t think any of us will ever use all the social websites or bookmarks although it is neat to have to check how popular or widely use the username is. Last tip- if the name you like so much is still taken, do try to use underscore or dash to combine two name to become a unique name. That should help to expand your list of available usernames so you can finally pick and choose the username you like most for all the sites. If you do find this useful or other cool or weird names, let us know via comments.

Hi Cleothilde, I agree that Twitter is good for sharing at the moment thoughts though I prefer to read other ppl’s collections of thoughts at one place rather than follow bits by bits of it.
